Panel Filmfestival Locarno | Audio
New film festivals are springing up like mushrooms. These days most every city can be found on the festival calendar. But is a festival really about film or are the real motives perhaps location marketing, tourism promotion, event culture, glamour and the red carpet? Not a single festival is able to fund itself with ticket sales alone; they all depend on subsidies. The Swiss Association of Film Journalists (SVFJ) wants to reopen the debate on a closed issue: Are there too many film festivals? Who is entitled to what share of public funding? Are festivals undermining filmmakers’ chances of getting subsidies? What parameters should apply for official film promotion when granting subsidies?
